Currency Demonetization - An undeclared economic emergency imposed on Nation

Lambasting the Centre's move to ban 500 and 1000 rupee currency notes as part of efforts to crackdown on black money and terror financing, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati alleged that the BJP-led NDA regime has created an emergency-like situation in the country. Dubbing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's decision of currency demonetization as a 'selfish' act, the BSP chief asked as to why the government didn't take this step in the first 2.5 years of its rule. "The government is trying to deviate the attention from its failures. All citizens want a corruption-free India. BJP is repeating what the Congress did in the past. The BJP Government has created an emergency situation in the country," she added.
Asserting that 90 percent of the people are not happy with this ban, Mayawati said that the NDA has in the two-and-a-half years of its governance tried to benefit the big businessmen and tycoons. "The Central Government does not like Dalits. The people are facing problems at medical stores as they are not accepting the old currency notes. Soon after the announcement of note ban, the people were forced to shut down their shops. The people are badly affected by it," she added.
She said poor people and farmers have been badly hit by high denomination rupee ban decision. "It (the decision) is not in the interest of the people, it is in self-interest," she said, reminding people of the dark days of Emergency imposed by then Congress government. If Modi had been honest in his approach, he would not have waited for two-and-a-half years to take action against black money. "It is being said that the decision was taken by Modi after making his party economically strong by helping industrialists and capitalists to harass people.
"Centre has not thought about the poor and the way in which people formed serpentine queues at petrol pumps shows their connivance with the government for earning a quick buck," she said, adding people will punish BJP for this. Claiming that the decision to ban notes was taken in haste, Mayawati said it triggered chaos all over the country with people coming out on roads in panic on Tuesday night as if an earthquake had hit them.
